20th MAY - WORLD BEE DAY - LET'S HELP THIS GREAT POLLINATOR!

Did you know that 20 May is World Bee Day?

The UNO has designated this date as bee day to raise awareness of the importance of these pollinators, the threats they face and their contribution to sustainable development.

Happy Bee Day

We are often afraid when we meet a bee. However, they are harmless animals. And rather than fearing them, we should admire them. The role played by these tiny pollinators is essential as they contribute to the world's food supply, bringing greater diversity to our products and resulting in a more varied diet.

Today, 37% of the bee population is declining, according to the Report of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services.

This is due to the excessive use of insecticides, which leads to numerous losses in the production of honey and other bee products. In addition, climate change also influences the decline of the bee population.

This is of concern to the UN for the Food and Agriculture Organisation, as 75% of the world's food depends on pollination.

Greenpeace has conducted several studies and confirmed that 75% of the food we eat and 70% of plants depend on bee pollination. Therefore, if bees were to disappear or decrease in numbers, this would significantly impact life on the planet.

This is why La Marina Shopping Centre is doing its bit in the fight to survive these little animals. As well as helping with relevant information to raise public awareness, the centre has installed a beehive on the roof. Giving them a safe, pleasant and well cared for place.

No matter how small, every gesture helps to maintain a healthier planet. That is why we invite you to join the fight to preserve bees and the environment.

There are many ways to help daily. For example:

Grow native and mixed plants in your garden or on your balcony.

Bees need nourishment, so flowers must be available to them.

Buy honey from local beekeepers.

Honey produced by beekeepers retains as much of its vitamins and properties as possible, so its quality will meet all the requirements of food standards.

In this way, you will help the beekeeper cover the costs of his work helping the bees.

Avoid insecticides

Some plants repel pests naturally without using chemicals, for example, garlic for aphids or basil for problems with tomatoes.

Give bees a home

You can find beehives or bee nests in garden shops or even online. Another option is to dig holes of different sizes in a dry tree. In this way, you will provide a home for many species of bees.

However, many organisations allow you to sponsor beehives so that you can help with the maintenance of the bees.

Providing water

Water is essential for the development of a hive. Bees need to drink water, so installing a water trough in your garden or on your balcony will help.

As you can see, there are some gestures that you can carry out to conserve bees and, therefore, the World in which we live.
